About Us

About the Duke East Asia Nexus (DEAN)

Founded in 2007, DEAN is a multi-faceted student organization that seeks to enrich the Duke Community’s understanding of political, economic, and cultural issues facing the region of East Asia.

DEAN has three branches:
  • Publications edits and compiles the DEAN print and online journal, which this website is dedicated to housing. See below for more details about the journal.
  • Programming brings esteemed speakers, panels, film series, and other events to the Duke community. Information about our events can be found on our Facebook page.
  • Conferences runs the Duke-UNC China Leadership Summit. More information about the conference can be found on their website.

Additionally, DEAN co-authored a proposal for an East Asian studies certificate with Asian/Pacific Studies Institute (APSI) with the hope to build a community of East Asia scholars who can work with each other and advance the discipline both inside and outside the classroom. The certificate was approved by the Curriculum Committee in Spring 2010 and was officially launched in Fall 2010.

About the journal

DEAN's online academic journal interrogates the dynamic region of East Asia through a multidisciplinary approach. Our first issue was published in March 2008 with articles mostly by Duke students. Since then we have become one of the nation’s leading peer-reviewed undergraduate academic journals on East Asia.

In Fall 2009, DEAN obtained a grant from the Duke Bassett Fund to publish our first hard-copy journal in addition to our online journal.  Thanks to this grant, DEAN has expanded to include a bi-annual hard copy publication which puts into print a selection of the best papers found on our website. The fall edition of the hard copy publication is released in early September and the spring edition is released in early January.
