What is a correspondent?

The DEAN journal is offering the exciting opportunity to become a journal correspondent! A correspondent is akin to a staff writer at any other publication. They would be responsible for submitting monthly articles for DEAN Digest, and have an opportunity to write a column for the semesterly print journal.

Why become a correspondent?

Correspondents enjoy the benefits of:

  • Accruing journalism/writing experience
  • Publishing original work.
  • Joining a nationwide community of undergraduate and graduate leaders in East Asian studies
  • Making an impact on an exciting, and growing, student publication

How do I become a correspondent?

Applications for Fall 2017 is now open! Please email us at duke.nexus@gmail the following:
  • a copy of your most up-to-date resume
  • a 400-word essay on an East-Asian focused topic of your choice
  • a 150-word explanation on why you would like to join DEAN

We accept submissions for both the print journal and online blog (DEAN Digest) at all times. Please contact us at duke.nexus@gmail.com if you are interested in submitting a piece.

Who can become a correspondent?

As long as you are an undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled in an institution of higher education (NOT limited to Duke University or the United States), you are qualified to apply to be a DEAN correspondent. Students who attend universities outside of the United States are welcome to apply to become a correspondent, though written fluency in English is required.
