OCCUPY HONG KONG: Protest + Activism in Asia

Picture
A Panel Discussion featuring Professors Nicole Barnes (History), Michael Hardt (Literature), Ralph Litzinger (Cultural Anthropology) & Zhang Taisu (Law) on the politics and the significance of the ongoing pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.

Begun a little over a month ago, the protests have grown from their initial student base to encompass blue-collar and everyday Hong Kong people and their problems. Demanding universal suffrage through the Basic Law, the ideas at stake include the concept of One-Country Two-Systems, China's relationship with democracy, and the future of the people of Hong Kong.

The topics and questions we will cover include: What will the legacy of these protests be? How have protesters used cultural images, sounds, and symbols to demand political change? How do they fit into a larger historical context of social protest in Asia?
