DEAN Submission Guidelines

All papers submitted for consideration in the DEAN Journal—either hard copy or online—should be of high quality. Papers written for classes or conferences are permitted, but should have no history of publication.

What can be submitted?

The DEAN Journal covers a wide range of content related to East Asia. Work can be from a wide range of disciplines, such as politics, art, contemporary culture, military, etc. If you are not sure whether your work fits the scope, please do not hesitate to reach out and discuss with us! You can submit the following types of original pieces (<3000 words):
    •      Academic papers/articles/research (note that these may be light to heavily edited to reflect the content of the journal, which is not overly academic)
    •      Book, movie, and music reviews
    •      Interviews
    •      Photo essays
    •      Other - please feel free to contact the publishing team at deanpublishingteam@gmail.com to discuss! Want examples/inspiration on topics? Check
out past DEAN journals here: http://www.dukenex.us/issues.html

Formatting

Submissions should be sent to deanpublishingteam@gmail in .doc or .docx file extensions. Please ensure that citations are consistent with the conventions of the subject matter. Collaborative pieces are welcomed.

Deadline for Submission

1st of April, 2019
We strongly encourage submitting as early as possible! Our editors work hard to review pieces as they come in. Remember that you can submit any work you have produced in the past as long as it has not been published before.

Some Fine Print

Due to the limit of the number of articles we can publish in print, DEAN may publish a hard copy and "expanded" online version of its journal, hence some articles may be published in the online version only. We will communicate this clearly and openly with authors if this situation occurs.

All papers submitted for consideration in the DEAN Journal—either hard copy or online— should be of high quality. We welcome papers written for classes or conferences that have no previous history of publication.

The DEAN Journal is a constituent of Duke’s Undergraduate Publication Board (UPB), and as such follows its prescribed rules on publication ownership. In principle, all submissions become the intellectual property of DEAN, but we are open to further discussions and rights may revert to authors upon request. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us for questions!

Comments/Recommendations/Ideas

Have a friend, professor, or classmate you think would be a great writer for the journal? Got a topic that intrigues you, but don't necessarily have the time to write about it on your own? Please reach out to us either through DEAN's Facebook account or deanpublishingteam@gmail.com! Your comments may well help us to reach out to more writers or help set up collaborative pieces!
