On Tuesday, Duke East Asia Nexus Club hosted the screening of the 2017 documentary "Sittwe: Youth Dialogue on the Buddhist-Muslim Conflict." Filmed over two years, SITTWE explored the teenagers' perceptions about "other" communities, Buddhists and the Rohingya, while delineating Rohingya crisis in detail. Following the screening, producer of SITTWE, Myo Win, discussed the complex and frequently bloody relationship between the Buddhist majority and the subjugated Muslim Rohingya population of Myanmar. Rohingya, falsely alleged by Buddhist nationalists, has been stripped of numerous rights, including the right to citizenship and even formal status as a Burmese minority group. Win said that though most ideas about the danger the Rohingya pose to Burmar are largely unfounded, Burmese government does not attempt to correct them but, on the other hand, uses them to justify its internment of the Rohingya. Win noted these irresponsible actions have resulted in the exodus of over 600,000 Burmese Muslims since the start of violence in 2012, along with countless untold murders, rapes and massacres. At the end of the event, attendees agreed that the first step to solving the Rohingya crisis would be to develop a mutual understanding between two groups.
